Your Seat at the Table: A Billionaire’s Case for Poker as a Career Strategy

by | Jan 16, 2024 | Entrepreneurship, Female Leadership

Self-made billionaire Jenny Just identifies a critical gap holding women back: not a skills gap, but a strategic confidence gap. Her unconventional tool for closing it? Poker. For first-gen professionals, the game teaches a vital lesson: how to make powerful decisions with incomplete information—a skill we use daily, but rarely claim as expertise.

We often approach our careers like a test where we need to have all the right answers. But what if the game isn’t about having perfect information but about strategically navigating the information you have? This is the core insight of self-made billionaire Jenny Just, who attributes her success in finance to lessons learned at the poker table (Marcus, 2023).

Just founded “Poker Power” as a leadership laboratory. She identifies two key shortcomings that hold women back in high-stakes environments: risk aversion and a discomfort with capital allocation (whether that capital is financial, social, or temporal). Poker, a game of calculated probability and psychological insight, is the perfect training ground to rewire these instincts.

Poker as a Metaphor for First-Gen Navigation

For first-gen professionals, this is a reflection of our reality. We’ve never had the “full deck” of inherited social capital. Our entire careers have been an exercise in reading the room, assessing unspoken odds, and making bold moves with limited certainty. Poker simply codifies this lived experience.

The game teaches:

  • Strategic Bluffing as Executive Presence: Projecting confidence in your hand, even when you have doubts, is not dishonesty; it’s a necessary strategy to maintain position and influence.
  • Reading “Tells” in the Boardroom: Understanding the subtle cues of colleagues and competitors—who is nervous, who is overplaying their hand—provides a critical strategic advantage.
  • Knowing When to Fold: Just as crucial as knowing when to bet is recognizing a sunk cost. The ability to strategically retreat from a losing project or a toxic dynamic preserves your resources for a more winnable hand.

Beyond the Table: Building Compound Experience

Just’s philosophy centers on “compound experiences”—the idea that small, calculated risks, even those that result in failure, build the judgment needed for larger successes (Marcus, 2023). This is the antidote to the perfectionism that often traps high-achieving women. We are conditioned to see a failed bet as a personal failure, instead of a data point that informs our next, more strategic move.

Is This for You?

The goal isn’t for every first-gen leader to become a poker champion. The goal is to recognize that the skills you develop at the table—probabilistic thinking, emotional control under pressure, and strategic capital allocation—are the very skills that define top-tier leadership. It’s about consciously practicing the strategic confidence we’ve been taught to suppress.

Your career is not a test with one right answer. It’s a series of high-stakes, incomplete-information games. Learning to play them with intention is more than a competitive advantage. For those aiming for the most powerful seats, it’s a necessity.
